Hardwood vs. Softwood Pellets. What’s the Difference?

Choosing the Right Wood Pellets for Heating and Animal Bedding

One of the questions frequently asked in the pellet industry is whether hardwood or softwood makes the better pellet. The answer depends largely on what the pellet is intended to do.

For Heating Applications

Hardwood is sometimes assumed to automatically produce more heat because of its traditional association with firewood. With manufactured wood pellets, however, the comparison is more complex.

Once wood fibre has been dried, processed and compressed into pellets, characteristics such as moisture content, ash content, density, pellet durability and combustion performance become important measures of pellet quality.

High-quality softwood pellets can deliver excellent heating performance, often with a slightly higher energy content per kilogram and potentially lower ash levels than comparable hardwood pellets. However, actual performance depends on fibre quality, manufacturing conditions and the finished product’s specifications.

For Animal Bedding

The requirements are entirely different.

A bedding pellet is not selected for its calorific value. Important characteristics include absorbency, expansion after moisture contact, cleanliness, dust levels, odour management and ease of stall maintenance.

Both hardwood and softwood can be used for bedding, provided the fibre is suitable, clean and properly processed. The quality of the raw material and the finished pellet matters more than the wood category alone.

Choosing Pellets for the Right Application

BC Global Energy uses Canadian SPF — Spruce, Pine and Fir — softwood fibre, providing a clean and consistent raw material for the different pellet applications we produce and develop.

So perhaps the better question isn’t:

“Is hardwood or softwood better?”

But rather:

“Which pellet characteristics are best suited to the intended application?”

Understanding that difference is important when choosing the right pellet.
